mountain

You were born when the qi of Mountains was dominant. Northeast is the direction of the mountain, which belongs to the element earth. The front door of your house should face northeast so that the energy of your element will flow unimpeded into your residence. This is an auspicious direction, so a northeastern room on the 2nd floor of your house could be a study, a den or a bedroom. The northeast is governed by the two Stellar Attendants who stand to the left and right of the Big Dipper--the throne of Shang Di, the Celestial Lord.

thunder

The element of thunder is wood. Like the taproot of an ancient tree, in the mutual conquest order of the elements wood saps your element earth. Thus, in a mountain house, east is the direction of malignancy. Were the master of the house to spend much time here, a distressing event might occur. But the malignancy can be countered by locating the kitchen here so that the fire of the stove will burn off the sha, or killing qi. This section of the house may also be utilized as a bedroom for other members of the household, such as an older child, or as a guest bedroom.

wood

Southeast is also the direction of wood. Like the primitive wooden plowshare of the Chinese peasant, this element breaks open the fallow ground, wounding the earth of your mountain. For a mountain person, wood is the element of death, and you should spend as little time as possible here. This section of the house is never appropriate for living space, and should be used for storage.

fire

Fire resides in the south. In a mountain house, south is the direction of injury and misfortune, and permanent residents of this sector will be prone to accident. The southern section of the house is still appropriate for temporary living space, such as a guest bedroom, as long as residents do not use sharp instruments or appliances.

earth

Your master bedroom should be placed in the southwest sector of your house, the direction of the earth. The time you spend in this room will be rejuvenating. This is the direction of sheng qi, "vital breath," the most auspicious portion of your home.

lake

West is the direction of the lake, which belongs to the element metal. The dining room should be located in the west, the direction of long life for the mountain person, whose earth harbors the metal of lake.

heaven

The study, office, or den/living room should be located in the northwest portion of the house, the direction of heaven. Heaven also belongs to the element metal, which is harbored by your earth. The Celestial Physician governs this room, so a bedroom here is the ideal place to recuperate from illness.

water

Water is obstructed by dikes and dams of your element earth, in the mutual destruction order of the five elements. The direction of water is the traditional location in a Chinese home for the ancestral altar. The northern section of your house could therefore be haunted and is not appropriate for a bedroom, or any room that is occupied at night. A bathroom or kitchen would be appropriate here.
